Promotion Management

Unique promotion codes can be created to offer discounts on order totals. Multiple parameters and restrictions can be combined to use promotions to address many discount needs.

Status, begin date, and end date determine whether or not a promotion code is active. Discounts can be applied to the price of an item, the shipping cost for the order, or the order subtotal. The discount itself can deduct a percentage or a fixed monetary value.

Multiple criteria can be assigned to a promotion to restrict how the the code can be applied, who can use the code, and how often the code can be used. Promotions can be restricted to a specific customer and to a specific product. Minimum ordered items, shipping cost, and order subtotal determine minimum criteria that must be satisfied before the discount is applied. Promotions can be also be limited to a maximum applied discount and maximum number of uses.

Promotion codes can be passed in a URL (from links on the site, links from banner ads, links from emails, etc) or manually entered by the customer during the checkout process.

Example Uses

In addition to regular store promotional specials, the flexibility of the promotion system enables promotions to be used in creative ways to address many needs.

  • Storewide sales - Create a promotion that is automatically set on checkout to offer X% off the order subtotal on a specific date or date range.
  • First time customers - Customers that are placing their first order receive X% off their order total.
  • Thank you emails - Reward customers that have purchased X times by sending them an email that contains a hyperlink to the store with the promotion code in the URL.
  • Compensation for Complaints/Suggestions - Suppose a customer is to be compensated for a service complaint or rewarded for an outstanding suggestion they provided. Create a promotion with the appropriate monetary/percentage value that is restricted to their customer ID.
  • Gift Certificates - One-time use gift certificates. If the customer does not use the entire value, then the remaining value is forfeited.
  • Free shipping - Offering free shipping for orders of a minimum monetary value is popular with online stores especially during the holiday season.
  • Marketing testing - Create multiple variations of the same promotion and compare the resulting sales to determine what type of promotions lead to more sales.
